When to Seek Support for Your Child

Many parents contact me when they notice their child is struggling emotionally but aren’t sure how serious the issue is. Sometimes the changes are gradual, and it can be difficult to know when extra support may help.

Therapy can help when you notice things such as:

• Increased anxiety or excessive worrying
• Difficulty going to school or school refusal
• Low confidence or negative self-talk
• Frequent emotional outbursts or meltdowns
• Social difficulties or friendship challenges
• Changes in mood, sleep, or behaviour
• Feeling overwhelmed by emotions
• Difficulty coping with loss or significant life changes

Early support can help children and teenagers develop healthy coping skills and emotional resilience that last a lifetime.

How I Help

At Pure Potential Therapy, I provide a calm and supportive space where young people can safely explore their thoughts, feelings, and challenges.

Therapy may help your child to:

✔ Manage anxiety and worries
✔ Build confidence and self-esteem
✔ Improve emotional regulation
✔ Develop coping strategies for stress
✔ Strengthen social and communication skills
✔ Process difficult experiences such as grief or loss

I draw on evidence-based approaches, including:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Mindfulness-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (MB-CBT)
Strength-based approaches
Emotional regulation strategies
Relaxation and visualisation techniques

Alongside counselling approaches such as CBT, I may also use guided relaxation and visualisation techniques to help young people feel calmer and more confident.

These gentle approaches support emotional regulation and help children and teenagers learn how to settle their minds and bodies when they feel anxious, overwhelmed, or stressed.

Many young people respond well to these techniques because they naturally have vivid imaginations and can use them in positive ways to build confidence, develop coping skills, and feel more in control of their emotions.

These methods are always used in a safe, supportive, and age-appropriate way, ensuring the young person feels comfortable and fully in control throughout the process.

Sessions are always adapted to the age, personality, and individual needs of the young person.

Support for Neurodivergent Children

I have extensive experience supporting children and young people who are neurodivergent, including those with Autism (ASD) and ADHD.

Neurodivergent children may experience challenges around emotional regulation, sensory processing, social interaction, or managing anxiety and change.

My approach recognises and respects these differences. Sessions are adapted to meet each child’s needs and may include:

• A calm and supportive environment
• Sensory-aware strategies to support regulation
• Practical tools for managing anxiety and big emotions
• Support with social understanding and confidence
• Strength-based approaches that recognise each child’s abilities

My aim is to help neurodivergent children feel understood, supported, and confident in who they are.

About Anne Marie

My name is Anne Marie O’Grady, and I am a Therapist specialising in working with children and adolescents.

I hold a BA in Childhood Studies and a Master’s degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy, and I have many years of experience supporting young people in both educational and therapeutic settings.

I have worked with SOSAD and Sensory Space, supporting individuals experiencing anxiety, grief, depression, and emotional distress. This work has deepened my understanding of how emotional challenges, loss, and life transitions can affect young people and their families.

Alongside my counselling work, I have extensive experience supporting children with ASD, ADHD, and sensory needs, which has given me a strong understanding of the emotional and developmental challenges some young people face.

My approach is warm, supportive, and practical, helping young people develop the confidence, resilience, and emotional skills they need to navigate life’s challenges.

What Parents Often Notice Before Seeking Support

Parents often reach out when they begin to notice small changes in their child that don’t seem to improve over time.

Parents sometimes say things like:

• “My child seems more anxious than usual.”
• “School has become a daily struggle.”
• “They have lost confidence in themselves.”
• “Small things now lead to big emotional reactions.”
• “They seem overwhelmed and don’t know how to cope.”
• “They are withdrawing from friends or spending more time alone.”

Therapy provides a safe, supportive space where young people can talk openly, understand their emotions, and develop coping strategies.

Seeking support early can make a significant difference in helping children and teenagers feel more confident, calm, and able to manage life’s challenges.
